Our efforts to be green
At CNET Networks UK, we're concerned about the impact that we have as a company on the environment and are taking positive action to counteract it.
For the last year we have been working closely with Carbon Smart not only to off-set our carbon emissions for 2007 but to understand our carbon footprint and identify the practical ways in which we can decrease the emissions we're responsible for.
In September, an eco-conscious and enthusiastic group of employees volunteered to get together and create the Green Team. The team meets on a regular basis and has already helped us implement some simple and practical solutions so we use less energy and become more efficient:
- We use energy-saving light bulbs throughout the offices
- All our printers and photocopiers use recycled paper
- The office lights are movement sensitive and turn off automatically after a given time
- We've implemented timer plugs on all of our electrical equipment so that they turn off automatically overnight and during the weekend
- We've made it easier to recycle, having paper recycling bins at the end of each row of desks, can and plastic recycling bins situated around the offices and compost bins in the breakout area
Thanks to these simple measures, we are close to reaching our Green target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 33 tonnes per year (25%). 2008 will bring another audit to calculate our carbon emissions for 2007 and execute on further green initiatives to gain our Carbon Smart status.
